Question

I seen several posts about a weckl lick that goes like RLLFFRLFF or something like that. I was wondering is this played as 32nd notes or triplets. I've heard alot of katz play it but I can't seem to figure it out. I was just curious. Thanks

I'm guessing fast 16th, or 32nd most likely.

I can't think of this being in triplet feel... though dave does a ton of playing in that zone.

What are some songs where he pulls this out in particular?

16th note triplets work well, as it takes up three 1/8 notes in time. It could be phrased(over the bar) like a dotted quarter note in 4/4 time. It also works well in "3" jazz waltz time as 1/8 triplets. You can accent the singles(and orchestrate them around the toms) and play the double left hand ghosted on the snare. It is a lick that a lot of people use because it sounds cool and it is easy. You can also use a double pedal if you need to play it really fast.
But I would recommend playing the Hihat on quarters with the left foot, and playing the pattern in 16trips so you can feel it a bit better, and you have a 2:3 pattern in 3/4.
Better yet, play quarters on the LF hat, and count in 4/4. That way you can really feel the cross rhythm, and be able to jump the riff in anywhere in 4/4.
Then, if you like it, never play it on more than one fill per gig. Two if it's a fusion gig.

As Kim Plainfield once said when we were studying Dave's style: "Weckl uses nines to DEATH!".

Yes it's phrased as 16th notes triplets and it's found all over the place in Dave's soloing (mid 80s early 90s).

Great explan, FT [& Tombo].

Yep. Absolutely 16th triplets [9 strokes - no jokes]. Weckl did it quite well, of course. ;c)

...STOP playing it if the frontman or gtrst is on the receiving end of the apparel...
